US College Volleyball Recruiting Timeline

International students: US colleges recruit players from many countries. The NCAA Eligibility Center reviews academic records from your country's school system (official transcripts plus certified English translations) and also certifies your amateur status. Start early and see Eligibility.

Volleyball recruiting starts earlier than most families expect, but the key NCAA date is simple: Division I and II coaches can begin calling, texting and making verbal offers on June 15 after your sophomore year. Before that, your job is to get good, get organized and keep your grades up. Use this grade-by-grade plan to know what to do and when.

This timeline uses US school grades: 8th–9th grade is about ages 13–15, 10th grade about 15–16, 11th grade about 16–17 and 12th grade about 17–18. If you're in another school system, ask the college's compliance office how these NCAA dates apply to you.

8th and 9th grade: build the base

  • Play as much as you can: school team, club, camps, sand or grass in the summer.
  • Register for a free Profile Page account at the NCAA Eligibility Center (eligibilitycenter.org). See US College Eligibility.
  • Meet your school counselor and find your school's list of NCAA-approved core courses.
  • Start filming matches. You won't send this video yet, but you'll learn what good footage looks like.
  • Coaches at NCAA Division I and II schools may send you camp information and questionnaires, but they can't recruit you directly yet.

10th grade: get organized

  • Make a first list of schools at several levels (D1, D2, D3, NAIA, junior college).
  • Build your first highlight video and a simple player profile (height, position, club, grad year, GPA).
  • Email coaches at schools you like. They may not be allowed to reply yet, but they can read your email and watch your video.
  • If an NCAA Division I or II school is recruiting you, switch your Eligibility Center account to an Academic and Athletics Certification account.
  • June 15 after 10th grade: NCAA Division I and II coaches may start calling, texting, emailing and messaging you directly. D1 coaches may make verbal offers from this date. D2 schools may also host official visits and make in-person contact off campus from this date.

11th grade: the busiest year

  • Aug. 1 before 11th grade: Division I coaches may host official visits (paid by the school) and unofficial visits (paid by you), and may talk with you in person off campus — when the recruiting calendar allows.
  • Update your video after big tournaments.
  • Visit campuses. Each school may give you only one official visit, but you can take official visits to as many different schools as you like.
  • Ask your counselor to upload your transcript at the end of the school year.
  • Check that you're on track with core courses (see US College Eligibility).

12th grade: decide and sign

  • Apply for admission. Being recruited is not the same as being admitted.
  • Signing for an athletic scholarship at NCAA D1 or D2 now uses an athletics aid agreement (it replaced the National Letter of Intent). Once you sign, other schools must stop recruiting you.
  • April 1: If you're enrolling in the fall, you can request your final amateurism (athletics) certification in your NCAA Eligibility Center account (see US College Eligibility).
  • Ask your counselor to upload your final transcript with proof of graduation.
  • Not committed yet? Keep emailing. Many D2, D3, NAIA and junior college programs recruit seniors.

NCAA Division I women's volleyball calendar, 2026–27

A recruiting calendar controls when D1 coaches can meet you in person and watch you play. It does not change the June 15 / Aug. 1 start dates above.

  • Aug. 1–31, 2026: Quiet period (in-person contact only on the college's campus)
  • Sept. 1–Nov. 30, 2026: Contact period, except a dead period Nov. 9–12, 2026
  • Dec. 1, 2026–Jan. 14, 2027: Quiet period, with a dead period Dec. 17, 2026–Jan. 1, 2027 (around the NCAA championship)
  • Jan. 15–July 31, 2027: Contact period, with quiet periods March 1–4, March 8–11, March 15–18, March 22–25, March 29–April 1, April 5–8, and May 1–June 3

What the periods mean:

  • Contact period: Coaches may meet you in person on or off campus and watch you play.
  • Quiet period: Coaches may meet you in person only on their own campus. No off-campus scouting.
  • Dead period: No in-person contact or scouting anywhere, and no campus visits. Coaches can still call, text and email.

Men's volleyball and Division II

  • Men's volleyball (NCAA D1): The same start dates apply (communication and verbal offers June 15 after 10th grade; visits and off-campus contact Aug. 1 before 11th grade). We could not find a separate men's volleyball recruiting calendar on ncaa.org for 2026–27, so ask each school's compliance office about any dead periods.
  • NCAA Division II: D2 uses a single all-sports calendar with short dead periods. For the 2026–27 cycle, there's a signing dead period from Nov. 9 (7 a.m.) to Nov. 11, 2026 (7 a.m.), plus dead periods Dec. 22, 2026–Jan. 1, 2027; Feb. 1–3, 2027 (signing); Feb. 15–17, 2027; and May 29–31, 2027.
  • NCAA Division III, NAIA and NJCAA: These levels have far fewer timing limits. Many of their coaches recruit juniors and seniors. Reach out early anyway.
Deep dive: why so many girls commit early — and why you shouldn't panic

In women's volleyball, top Division I programs often make verbal offers soon after June 15 of sophomore year. A verbal commitment isn't binding on you or the school, and most college players were not early commits. Coaches at many D1, D2, D3, NAIA and junior college programs keep recruiting through junior and senior year. If you haven't heard from a dream school by fall of junior year, widen your list rather than stopping.
