About Learn Volley

Learn Volley is a free, independent volleyball guide. Its core is a set of animated courts you can step through, rotation by rotation, so players, coaches, PE teachers and parents can see where everyone stands and moves. Around them are rules, skill guides, drills, printables and tools, all free, with no sign-up, in five languages: English, Spanish, Portuguese, French and Japanese.

What we do

The animated courts cover six formations: the 6-6, the 4-2, the 4-2 with middle blockers, the 6-2, the 5-1 where the opposite receives, and the standard 5-1. Around them we publish:

Our approach

We start from the beginning: The Basics section covers the rules, court zones, positions and key terms, and the rest of the site builds on it to show how the game is played. The animations are simplified models and a starting point for understanding stages, formations, rotations, positions and roles, so adjust them to your own team's ability.

How we check our content

Rules content follows and is checked against the FIVB Official Volleyball Rules 2025–2028, the current international rulebook. Where US rules (USA Volleyball, high school, college) differ in a way you'd notice in play, a short US note says so, checked against the US rule books. Rule-sensitive pages carry a “last checked” note so you can see how current they are. Spot a mistake? Email learnvolley@proton.me so we can correct it.

Rankings data

The world ranking pages show the official FIVB (Fédération Internationale de Volleyball) rankings for men's and women's indoor and beach volleyball, taken from the FIVB's published rankings. Each page is a dated snapshot and shows its ranking date. For the very latest figures, check the FIVB website.

Advertising and affiliate links

Learn Volley shows ads from Google AdSense, which are chosen by Google. Some English equipment guides also contain Amazon affiliate links, and each one is marked Advertisement right next to the link. If you buy through one, we may earn a commission that helps support Learn Volley. Commissions don't decide which products we recommend or in what order, and no brand pays to be listed. Affiliate links appear only where we say so; donations are separate and go through PayPal or Ko-fi.
