Court & Net Dimensions
Under the FIVB Official Volleyball Rules, the court is 18 m long and 9 m wide — two 9 × 9 m halves split by the centre line. An attack line 3 m from the centre line marks each front zone, and the net stands 2.43 m high for men and 2.24 m for women.

The court
The playing court is a rectangle 18 m long and 9 m wide, surrounded by a free zone of at least 3 m on all sides (wider for top international events). The centre line, directly under the net, divides it into two square 9 × 9 m team halves. On each side, the attack line is drawn 3 m back from the centre line, separating the front zone from the back zone. There should be at least 7 m of clear space above the court.
The net and antennas
- Height: the top of the net is 2.43 m for men and 2.24 m for women, measured at the centre of the court.
- Net size: the net is about 1 m from top to bottom and roughly 9.5–10 m long, so it overhangs the sidelines.
- Antennas: two flexible rods 1.8 m long are fixed at the outer edges of the net above the sidelines; each extends 80 cm above the net. The ball must cross the net between the antennas to be in play.
The ball
- Circumference: 65–67 cm.
- Weight: 260–280 g.
- Internal pressure: 0.30–0.325 kg/cm².

Deep dive: variations and youth play
Front zone, back zone and the attack line
The 3 m attack line is one of the most important markings on the court: back-row players may only attack a ball above the height of the net if they take off from behind it. The front zone (net to attack line) and back zone (attack line to end line) therefore shape where each player can attack and block.
Youth and age-group net heights
The 2.43 m / 2.24 m heights are the adult FIVB standard. For junior, youth and age-group play, net heights are lowered and vary by federation and age category, so there is no single universal figure — always check the rules of the governing body for your competition rather than assuming a number.
Why the measurements matter
Every rule about attacking over the net, back-row attacks, the antennas and the rotational positions is built on these fixed dimensions. Knowing them makes the rest of the rules easier to picture.
Frequently asked questions
What are the dimensions of a volleyball court?
A volleyball court is 18 m long and 9 m wide, divided by the centre line into two 9 × 9 m halves. Each half has an attack line 3 m from the centre line.
